So your book is finished. Months or years of hard work are behind you. The last page has been written, and your novel is done! You've revised, proofread, and double-checked it. You've even sent out a query letter. Everything is all set to go. Yep. Everything.
Are you sure? Really sure?
Of course you haven't made any of the standard grammatical and usage errors. You know the difference between its and it's, between affect and effect, and you're aware that the mythical word "alright" does not exist in English. You understand that the term "unique" cannot be qualified and that imply does not mean the same thing as infer.
Right?
But, wait - there's more! You know not to shift your POV. You know which publishers accept electronic submissions. You're pretty sure it was okay for your character to listen to Stairway to Heaven in 1970. You're possibly sure that...
You may be starting to see a pattern here. The reality is that it's very unusual for any author to be able to catch every mistake he or she makes. Larry Niven, in one of his books, once showed the earth rotating the wrong way. Jeannette Angell had a character taking a walk on the beach in San Jose, California. J.R.R. Tolkien referred to Bilbo in one scene where he meant to write Frodo. Now, this didn't keep them from getting published, but it wasn't exactly something that any of them could be proud of.
